Founder and President at Live Edge Design. RECLAIMED We salvage trees brought down by storms or left behind by forest companies and construction companies. Our favourite is the Western Bigleaf Maple (acer macrophyllum), sought after by luthiers, wood turners and carvers for its exceptional colour and figure. The outside edge of a tree has many names; bark to common folk, wane edge to the sawyers, cambium layer to the scientists. To us it was the “live edge”, named for the organic, life-like “motion” of the aesthetic as well as being the exact point of growth for the tree, thus alive. We chose Live Edge Design for the name of our new venture partly because we thought it was vague enough that it would still suit us if the design direction of the company shifted. Ironically, the name caught on and has become the main generic term for the genre. REFINED On its journey to becoming your custom made furniture the tree is milled into massive slabs, innovatively dried, exquisitely designed, expertly crafted and finely finished all at our studio on Vancouver Island.
