President Richard Nixon appointed Hardin as the 17th United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1969 to 1971. He served in Nebraska as the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Dean of Agriculture in 1953 and was the Chancellor from 1954 to 1968. He is known for his support of the 1970 farm bill.
